American Motorcyclist Association – The AMA is the national organization that sanctions amateur, semi-pro and youth motorcycle and ATV events throughout our country. For legal reasons, you MUST be a member of the AMA to participate in an AMA-sanctioned event. Applications are available for you to sign-up at any AMA-sanctioned event. Membership is $39.00 per year and is good for 12 months. If signing up at the track, BE SURE to retain your membership receipt until you receive your plastic membership card. Your membership includes a subscription to American Motorcyclist magazine, which contains a nationwide events schedule along with many articles on different aspects of motorcycling. You may also join the AMA by calling 800-AMA-JOIN, however, if you do not physically have your card or your receipt with you when you go to a race track to compete, you will be REQUIRED to sign up for the AMA again. The additional $39 will add an additional year to your membership. You can use a major credit card either at the track or over the phone. AMA cards take about 2 to 6 weeks to arrive depending on the time of year.

AMA District 7 - The AMA Amateur Competition Rulebook also requires that all competitors be a member of the District in which they live. If you are a resident of Maryland, Delaware or the District of Columbia, you must obtain a District 7 card. The card is available at all tracks that offer District 7 sanctioned events. The fee is $18 per calendar year and includes a subscription to Cycling East, which has information of local interest. If you sign up for more than one discipline in motorcycling, you can obtain a second card for only $3 more. If you are only going to race once, you can sign up for a $3.00 1-day membership. When you receive your membership card, it has a number assigned to you that becomes the number you will place on your motorcycle to compete with. (Do to a tremendous number of members, we cannot issue requested numbers.)  If you don’t have a valid District card, you WILL be required to sign-up and pay for one before you can compete.

Any MINOR (ages 17 & younger) MUST have a parent or guardian present during the entire time the minor is at the racetrack. You will be required to sign a release waiver in order that the minor may compete. Without a parent or legal guardian, the MINOR WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO COMPETE. There are NO exceptions to this rule.

The District 7 organization keeps track of all riders’ race results. Based on points schedules published annually in the March issue of Cycling East, you will be advanced accordingly. Please obtain a copy of the rules and read them.

RIDING GEAR:

The minimum riding gear shall consist of a motorcycle helmet, goggles, riding gloves, blue jeans, high-top boots and long sleeve jersey.

ADMISSION FEES

Most tracks in this area charge approximately $10 admission for adults coming into the facility. This fee entitles you to a whole day’s worth of racing as a spectator, which typically includes practice and two motos. It is not uncommon for more than 30 separate races to be conducted at a track on a single day.

REGISTRATION FEES

All competitors are required to provide a current AMA and District card at registration. Typical fees for each race class entered are $20 ~ $25 per class. A YOUTH rider may enter one or two classes. An amateur rider can enter up to three classes per day. YOUTH competitors MUST have a parent or guardian accompany them at Registration.

PURSE/TROPHIES

The AMA recommended guideline for trophy distribution is 1 trophy per 6 riders registered per class. Most tracks in this area exceed this ratio with 3:1 being common. B, C, Women and Youth Classes are considered Amateur and compete for trophies only. A Classes are considered Semi-Pro and may compete for a purse limited only by AMA Rules. Typically, A riders compete for a 100% payback from their registration fees. That simply means if 10 riders show up to race at $20 each, the top finishers will share a graduated payout based upon $200 of purse money.
